How good does my device need be to edit videos?

Video editing is on the rise, and more and more people are taking it on, for both social media endeavours, as well as to promote their business or enterprise via content creation.

Sometimes it becomes confusing for people as to why they cannot use advanced video editing tools on a basic laptop - Higher-end video editing software is going to need two things mainly: RAM, and a good core processor. Let's delve more into the factors you need to take into consideration.

Probably more important than anything to do with processors, RAM, or your future device in general - You are going to want to ask yourself how in-depth your video editing is going to get. Are you wanting to cut and trim? Do you want to add professional colour grading effects to your content?

These are the kinds of questions you need to ask yourself because ultimately, the more basic edits won't require an advanced editing tool, and hence, you can probably suffice on a laptop, PC or Mac with something like an i3 or i5 core processor. If you want to give your videos the kind of edits you see big You Tubers and corporate companies do, you're going to need a tool like Sony Vegas or DaVinci Resolve, and so you'll need (at a minimum) an i5 processor and 8 GB of RAM.

Do I Want To Multitask?

A great PC or laptop is going to enable you to multitask while editing videos - You might feel a 2nd monitor is necessary for your video editing aspirations - So an iMac or high end PC might be preferred. A laptop can perform just as well, but if you need previews, or apps like Photoshop or just about anything to aid your video editing experience on a 2nd screen, you're going to

need either an iMac, or a PC.

If you want to multitask without lag, and easily switch between desktop applications, we highly recommend you invest in a device with a minimum of 16 GB of RAM, as well as at least an i5, or even better, an i7 core processor. This just means you won't experience any delays, your video editing software won't lag, and you can render a 1 hour video in 10-20 minutes, as opposed to it taking several hours on a lower end i3 processor device.

At the end of the day, there are cheaper ways to get to a point where you can edit videos seamlessly, while still using advanced features. You can always install an extra set of RAM into your PC or laptop, this will dramatically improve your performance, and will cost a fraction of what it would be to invest in a completely brand new device. We recommend you weigh up your options based on your budget, your editing ambitions, and

your patience with lag and whether

you want to multitask seamlessly.
